Fire TV Vega OS Monitoring for Checkmk
Community MKP for monitoring Amazon Fire TV devices running Vega OS with Checkmk 2.5.
Vega CMK uses Amazon's Vega Device Adapter (VDA) to collect Linux system metrics and Vega-specific application diagnostics. It combines standard Checkmk Linux monitoring with application inventory, firmware tracking, change detection, resource-pressure metrics and an authenticated, on-demand screenshot viewer.
Designed for developers, QA environments and Vega OS testing.
What you get
- System monitoring: CPU utilization, CPU load, memory, swap, filesystems, disk I/O, network interfaces and uptime
- Resource pressure: CPU, memory and I/O pressure using Linux PSI, with historical graphs
- Application monitoring: Installed packages, selected application versions and enabled status
- Firmware monitoring: Vega OS version and build information
- Change detection: Alerts for changes to installed packages, monitored application versions and OS builds
- Component monitoring: Vega component lifecycle states, running components and foreground application identification
- Process-death diagnostics: Recent application lifecycle process-death events
- Screenshots: Authenticated, on-demand Fire TV screenshot capture through the Checkmk web interface
- Configurable applications: Site-local JSON configuration of application package identifiers, including Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube and other Vega applications
Created services
The package can create services such as:
Vega OS build
Vega OS build changes
Vega package inventory
Vega package changes
Vega app version changes
Vega app Prime Video
Vega app Netflix
Vega core components
Vega running components
Vega visible components
Vega screen activity
Vega app process deaths
Vega CPU pressure
Vega memory pressure
Vega I/O pressure
Standard Checkmk Linux services, including CPU load, Memory, Filesystems, network interfaces and uptime, are also available through the VDA-based Linux agent collection.
The number of services depends on the monitored applications, available system metrics and device configuration.
Requirements
- Checkmk 2.5.0 or newer
- Linux Checkmk site with Python 3
- Amazon Vega SDK with VDA installed on the same machine as the Checkmk site
- Amazon Fire TV device running Vega OS
- Developer Mode enabled and authenticated VDA access
- Private network connectivity to the device's VDA developer endpoint (typically TCP 5555)
- Appropriate permissions for the Checkmk site user to execute VDA
Tested with: Checkmk 2.5.0p17 and Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Select running Vega OS 2.0.
Installation
- Install using
mkp add / mkp enable, or through Setup > Extension packages.
- Create the site-local configuration:
~/etc/firetv_vega.json
- Configure the VDA executable path, Fire TV address and application identifiers.
- Create a Checkmk host and configure the host-specific rule:
Setup > Agents > Other integrations > Individual program call instead of agent access
Command:
/usr/bin/python3 /omd/sites/YOUR_SITE/local/bin/firetv_agent
- Replace
YOUR_SITE with your actual Checkmk site name.
- Discover services and activate changes. The optional screenshot viewer and change- detection baselines require additional setup.
Important limitations
- Experimental integration: Tested on one physical Vega OS device.
- VDA and the Checkmk site must run on the same Linux machine in this release.
- Remote collection through a separate Linux agent on TCP 6556 or SSH is not implemented.
- One Fire TV target is supported per Checkmk site configuration.
- Foreground application detection does not confirm video playback, playback position or media title.
- Full Linux process enumeration is restricted by the Vega developer shell.
- Screenshot capture may fail during DRM-protected video playback.
- The package does not modify Checkmk's existing Memory or filesystem thresholds.
Developer Mode provides significant device access. Use this integration on trusted development or QA networks.
