VMware vCSA Services and Appliance Health for Checkmk 2.5 / vSphere 8
Monitor VMware vCenter Server Appliance and vSphere environments through REST and SOAP APIs.
Fully rewritten for Checkmk 2.5 and vSphere 8, based on ideas from VCSA7 Health Status.
Features
- vCSA services, health, storage, uptime, version and updates
- NTP and time synchronization
- Cluster, HA, DRS, DPM and admission-control status
- ESXi connectivity and maintenance mode
- Active vSphere alarms
- CPU and memory metrics
- Global resource aggregation
- Collection-status monitoring
- Checkmk Password Store support
- Configurable WARN/CRIT thresholds
REST monitoring remains available when SOAP collection is unavailable.
Collection errors are reported through the vCSA Collection status service.
Requirements
- Checkmk 2.5.0 or newer
- VMware vCenter Server Appliance / vSphere 8
- HTTPS access from Checkmk to vCenter
- The standard Checkmk VMware vSphere monitoring requirements
For cluster and ESXi SOAP monitoring, install pyVmomi in the Checkmk site:
omd su SITE_NAME
pip3 install pyvmomi
Replace SITE_NAME with the name of your Checkmk site.
Without pyVmomi, vCSA REST monitoring remains available, while cluster and ESXi SOAP checks are skipped.
Permissions
- vSphere: use the same account and permissions as Checkmk's built-in VMware vSphere monitoring
- vCSA: add the account to
SystemConfiguration.ReadOnly
Configuration
- Install and enable the MKP.
- Create the vCenter host in Checkmk.
- Enable Configured API integrations for this host.
- Go to Setup > Agents > Other integrations.
- Add VMware vCSA services and appliance health.
- Configure credentials, HTTPS port, timeout and TLS verification.
- Restrict the rule to the vCenter host.
- Activate changes and run service discovery.
Additional rules are available for appliance health, NTP, HA, DRS, DPM, maintenance mode, alarms and CPU/memory thresholds.
